Day 145: Fried Rice & Steak

For lunch I heated up the leftover garlic rice from Saturday mixed with the leftover filling from stuffed cabbage and the rest of the cabbage.

For dinner we had pasta with pesto and steak. The fridge is so empty now! All we have in there is some red cabbage, eggs, hot dogs and condiments.

Non-food related activities:

Matt took off the afternoon since he worked all weekend so it was pretty chill. Then we watched The Gentlemen (Netflix DVD).

My Keanu mask came! I ordered it before the 4th of July so I was giving up hope.

Day 144: Chinese Sausage Stuffed Cabbage & Lox Salad

For our main meal at lunchtime Matt made sticky rice, Chinese sausage, chestnuts, mushrooms and cabbage stuffed savory cabbage. It has been a very sausage filled few days. We have some more sausage and fillings left too. I swear we will eat something not involving sausage soon.

It was really good! We had all of the ingredients in our pantry and the sausage in the freezer besides the cabbage which was from our produce delivery.

I’m skipping our next produce box because they haven’t responded to me about our missing kale and it has green beans, cantaloupe (which I hate), apples and acorn squash (in August!!). Not a good box at all.

For dinner I roasted some yellow squash and topped it with a quartered hard-boiled egg, pearl mozzarella, lox, cherry tomatoes, and red onion.

Non-food related activities:

I read a lot of Kindle Singles.

We watched Nothing Sacred via Netflix DVD. It was so strange. Nothing really happened.

Day 143: Longsilog & Soba with Crispy Tofu and Kohlrabi

Matt made longsilog with longanisa we had in the freezer. So good! We have some garlic rice leftover.

For dinner I made this recipe for sesame noodles but added crispy tofu I made. I hadn’t pressed and fried tofu in years! It was delicious.

Non-food related activities:

Applied for another puppy at a closer animal shelter.

Finished Umbrella Academy.

Read a bunch of Kindle Singles I had borrowed from Amazon. They count as books, right? Some are pretty long.

Day 141: Leftovers & Leftovers

I planned today to be an easy cooking day so I could bake something but a key ingredient was spoiled so I couldn’t.

We had leftover potato salad and one sausage each for lunch. I had the leftover beets too. I’m trying to clear out the fridge so I know what’s in there and make shopping easier on Wednesday.

For dinner we had leftover barley soup.

We have some fun meals planned for the weekend but they are all coincidentally pretty sausage heavy. That’s the problem with shopping less frequently, you really have to make do with what you have. I have some ideas for other meals but they all require a trip to the store.

Non-food related activities:

Umbrella Academy is back on Netflix!

I had another migraine (or the same one, rebounding?) and felt kind of woozy.

Started three books I didn’t like and returned them to the library.

Listened to more You’re Wrong About

Started watching New Girl. I’ve only seen the Prince episode before.

Day 140: Shrimp & German Potato Salad

For lunch I had some frozen breaded shrimp. I spent most of the morning talking to my mom and sort of ran out of time to think of anything.

For dinner I made these German sausages I got from Aldi, marinated some beets and made the other kind of German potato salad, the kind with apple. It was surprisingly tasty!

Next week Aldi has dog supplies on sale so I think I will do our grocery shopping then. It would only be three weeks but we are a little low on some items (carrots!) and we need a new container for dog food. Our freezer is still very full and I’m a little hesitant to use too much in it because I think things will get worse in the fall so it will be nice to get some fresh food.

I’ve really been stretching out the meat and other ingredients the last couple weeks so I actually ended up freezing more from the shop on June 17th than I expected. Aldi ads come out on Wednesday so that is my preferred shopping day and the following Wednesday is our eye appointment so I can’t shop then (dilated eyes) and the week after that is my birthday and Matt’s off the whole week so I don’t want to shop then either. My guess is I will either do a online order to fill in or we will go to a specialty store at some point around then.

Non-food related activities:

We’ve been talking about getting a second dog after Pippi suddenly died. I saw one that looks nice at a rescue and put in an application. Fingers crossed! It’s a bit of a drive but we’d only have to do it once.

I really spent most of the day talking to my mom about her medical care and books.

I listened to more You’re Wrong About. I can’t wait for Candace Opper’s memoir to come out. I find her fascinating. I had read an essay of hers about her fixation on a classmates suicide so I was excited to see she was the guest on the Kurt Cobain episode.

Trying to knock out at least one more book before the end of July!

We watched Popeye on Netflix DVD. What a weird movie. Oooooh. Ooooooh.

Day 139: Beef and Barley Soup & Stuffed Peppers

For lunch I had the leftover peppers and some crackers. I sort of chopped them up to make a dip. There wasn’t much left. Matt had noodles and cottage cheese.

I made beef and barley soup in the slow cooker. Not seasonally appropriate but stew meat is easy to find lately and it’s not like we don’t eat hot food in the summer. At least it didn’t hear up the house! It was really good, the package of beef was bigger than the one I used before so it was extra meaty which Matt liked.

Non-food related activities:

I got the knitting and the eco packs for the Sims. The knitting is so cute.

I had a migraine.

I finished the new Ruth Ware.

We watched some Damnation on Netflix.

Matt had a lot of work to do in the evening.

Day 138: Beef and Mash & Chicken Burgers

Produce delivery day is always exciting! Unfortunately the red Russian kale was missing but the extra mushrooms I ordered were there.

For lunch I had leftover beef from Monday and mashed potatoes from Sunday. There wasn’t much left of either. Matt didn’t feel great so he had noodles and cottage cheese.

For dinner I made chicken burgers with ground chicken, paprika, fennel seed, oregano and a tomato cucumber salad with pearl mozzarella. All very good! Bonus: used up some old Kaiser rolls.

Tomorrow I’m going to make this soup again because I was craving it. Who cares if it is July? I don’t have quite all of the ingredients I used in April so I’ll have to improvise a bit.

Non-food related activities:

No much! It was hot. I watched Stateless on Netflix while Matt worked in the afternoon and then we tried the Mary Higgins Clark series (French) on Mhz after dinner but it wasn’t very good.

I’m trying to think of what to do about my birthday next month. Normally we try to go on vacation that week so Matt is off but obviously that’s off the table.

Day 137: Stuffed Banana Peppers & Beef Rib Noodles

For lunch I made tuna and spinach stuffed banana peppers and used up a lot of random stuff from the fridge. So good!

For dinner I heated up the beef country ribs I cooked yesterday in the slow cooker with some zucchini and eggplant and fresh wide Chinese noodles. Two very successful meals in one day!

Non-food related activities:

We watching Thank God It’s Friday and Northern Soul on Prime. A great ‘70s music double feature. Donna Summer is always awesome. It’s odd American soul music was so popular in Northern England back then.

Did a lot of work on Coconut & Lime.

Finished another book.

Day 136: Fish Stick Sandwiches & Sundubu Jjigae

For lunch we had fish stick sandwiches (with homemade tartar sauce!) and chips.

For dinner Matt made us sundubu jjigae. Not the prettiest but it was very tasty! It used up the soft tofu tubes we had in the fridge (expiring 8/1) and he used some frozen (raw) mixed seafood from Aldi and dried mushrooms (we don’t have fresh right now) and homemade anchovy broth. We didn’t have the right seaweed for the broth but it still smelled the same as it does in restaurants. No leftovers, unfortunately!

We think we might get a set of dolsot or ttukbaegi since we will be stuck at home for a while. That would really expand some of our Korean cooking capabilities.

Non-food related activities:

I read a whole book.

We finished Babylon Berlin. The last season wasn’t quite as grim as the first two. I can’t wait for another season!

Day 135: Fried Egg & Chicken Burgers

Our figs are looking good! The Little Miss Figgy tree was supposed to top out at around 4×4 but it is massive. At least 7 feet and too big for the place we planted it.

We had a fried egg on some stir fried noodles with spinach for lunch then Matt made chicken burgers and mashed potatoes for dinner.

Non-food related activities/thoughts:

We played Quiddler in the yard. It was warm but not too bad. Oddly the breeze was damp and smelled like it does at the beach.

I finished the new J Courtney Sullivan book. I know I have read her earlier books but I can’t for the life of me remember what any of them were about.

We finished Watchman. It was good! I felt like it was a little hard to connect with the characters. The production values were amazing! Apparently each episode cost 15 million. That’s insane.

My foot oddly hurt when I walked today. I hope it’s nothing serious. I don’t remember bumping it and I’ve barely even worn shoes since March. I’m always worried about this spot below my knee I had badly bruised months ago and keep rehitting (it’s really in an awkward spot that gets hit a lot and sometimes I get a faint mark there about a shade darker than the rest of my skin after I hit it again but not a real bruise) that’s on the same leg but I can’t think how it would be related. Hopefully it will be fine tomorrow. It doesn’t hurt or anything when I am sitting or standing, just walking.

I keep worrying about the USPS. Oddly our mail delivery has been more regular than it has been in years but we have had mail take longer than we’d think to arrive.
